If you own a home in Asheville or anywhere in Western North Carolina, you already know the list of small repairs never stays small for long. A soft spot under a window becomes a rotten sill. A sticking door may point to worn hardware, moisture, or movement that needs a closer look. The difference between a repair that holds and one you pay for twice is rarely the tools — it is whether anyone wrote down what the job actually is before work started.
This is how we approach repairs at Handy Dandy Contracting, and what you should expect from any contractor you hire.
The repairs we handle most often
Most of the work on Asheville-area homes falls into a handful of categories:
- Drywall and interior patching. Cracks, holes, water damage, and the mess left behind after a plumbing or electrical fix.
- Painting and finish work. Interior repainting, touch-ups after repairs, trim painting, and matching existing colors.
- Flooring. Repair and replacement of damaged sections, transitions between rooms, and subfloor issues.
- Trim, doors, and hardware. Sticking doors, broken casing, baseboard replacement, and hardware that no longer lines up.
- Exterior repairs. Siding, fascia, soffit, and the wood rot that Western North Carolina humidity and heavy rain tend to find first.
- Storm damage restoration. The interior and exterior repairs that follow wind, falling limbs, and water intrusion.
Why a written scope matters more than an estimate
An estimate tells you a number. A scope tells you what that number buys.
A useful written scope answers five questions before anyone picks up a tool:
- What is being repaired? The specific rooms, surfaces, and assemblies — not "fix the back wall."
- What is the finish standard? Patched and primed is not the same as patched, textured, and painted to match.
- What is included in materials? Especially where matching existing flooring, trim, or paint colors is involved.
- What is excluded? If opening a wall might reveal something else, say so up front rather than mid-job.
- Who approves changes? If the job grows once the wall is open, there should be a written change and an approval before work continues.
When those five things are in writing, both sides know what done looks like. That is the whole point.
What the process looks like with us
We keep it deliberately plain:
1. You describe the problem. A phone call, a message, or photos of the issue are enough to start. You do not need to diagnose anything.
2. We look at the job. For larger repairs and anything involving water intrusion, we want eyes on it. Photos cover a lot, but they do not show what is behind a wall.
3. You get a written scope and estimate. Defined work, defined finish, defined exclusions, and a clear approval step. Nothing starts until you approve it.
4. The work is documented. We photograph the work as it progresses, so there is a record of what was found and what was done — useful for you, and useful if you ever sell the property or file a claim.
5. We follow up. If something is not right after we leave, we come back. That is the follow-through part, and it is the part most people remember.
What to check before you hire any contractor
- Ask for the scope in writing, and read the exclusions section twice.
- Confirm who is doing the work — the person who quoted it, or a crew you have not met.
- Ask how changes are handled mid-job.
- Ask for photos of comparable repairs.
- Confirm the service area actually covers your address.
None of that is unusual to ask. Any contractor who has done this for a while will answer without hesitating.

Frequently asked questions
Do you take on small repair jobs, or only full renovations? Both. A single door, a section of drywall, or a room of trim is a normal job for us. Larger renovations are scoped the same way, just with more steps.
Do I need to be home during the work? Not necessarily. What matters is that access, scope, and the approval path are settled before the first day.
Can you match existing paint, trim, or flooring? Often, yes — and where an exact match is not possible, we will tell you before the work starts rather than after.
What if you find something unexpected once the wall is open? You hear about it before anything changes. No work continues on the newly discovered issue until you approve it in writing.
